Destin Bay House Florida Wedding

Gorgeous Stormy Destin Bay House Wedding

Destin Bay House

Although destination weddings are a big part of my business, I’m also a Florida wedding photographer, since that’s where I am much of the year. So when I’m around, I jump at the chance to go to my favorite Florida venue. Sitting like an oasis in the middle of one of the state’s busiest beach towns, Destin Bay House is an intimate, family-run venue. Surrounded by oak trees dripping with Spanish moss and overlooking the Choctawhatchee Bay, it was just the right place for Rebecca and Andrew’s unexpectedly rainy wedding.

Rebecca & Andrew

You would think meeting a groom for the first time while standing in a parking lot would be awkward, but with a bevy of women spying from the window, it was actually kinda cute. So was Andrew and he was particularly dapper in his bow tie and wingtips. During the first look, Rebecca, Andrew, Tiffany (who graciously second shot with me) and I went out onto the dock. The day started out as perfect as perfect can be: cloudless and sunny. It was clear one second and in genuine Florida fashion, a huge, black storm cloud rolled in before we could blink.

Taking advantage of a menacing cloud like this involved me either lying down on the dock or getting into the tumultuous water. I nearly fell in after all, but it was absolutely worth it. When the wind kicked up to Mach 12, we hightailed it back inside with about two minutes to spare. Just so you know, having clients that trust your vision is worth more than gold.

So what do you do if it’s a torrential downpour at the Destin Bay House? You go to the covered porch. While Tiffany and I set up a light, someone found the wine stash, and we knocked out some killer portraits in record time. Boom. Cause that’s how we roll at DBH.

By the time guests arrived, the rain had cleared. As we made our way onto the now sparkly lawn, you could see everyone was truly at ease and it made for such a fun wedding. I loved the vibe. It was classy but casual. Upscale but not uptight. You could feel Rebecca and Andrew’s spirit in all of their design choices. But you could really see evidence of their spirits when Rebecca hugged Father Ross after pronouncing them, man and wife. Seriously, my heart melted right then.

I love it when I get a wedding with Tammy from the Eventful Planner and Vanessa from A Cupcakery by the Sea. Dude. I will drive two hours for one of Vanessa’s cupcakes and her cake pops were particularly phenomenal that day. I had to race to grab the second-to-last one! In addition to Tammy and Vanessa, there was truly an amazing collection of vendors: Destin Bay House owner, Erin, the hostess with the most-est. Friendly Florist, who provided gorgeous garden roses I couldn’t stop smelling. The talented Shane of Rock the House is a man who brings elegance to disk jockeying. Tiffany, my go-to second photographer extraordinaire always keeps me on point. Leah Strange, a ridiculously amazing makeup artist and of course, Mother Nature herself. She’s the only one I really question here. You gotta watch out for Mother Nature. She’s such a show-off.
