It was a rainy Sunday when I ducked into Bay Grape to meet Avi and Samantha for the first time in person. We had previously met via skype but this was exciting because I was totally enamored with them, which kinda made it feel like a second date.
Bay Grape is an uber-trendy bottle shop with a mission to make wine less douchey. It’s working because I could have spent hours just reading quippy wine descriptions, like ‘Fine Ass Riesling’ written directly on bottles lining the shelves. I’m so glad it was raining because it forced us to stay put for a while. It gave me a chance to see firsthand how much these two love each other, but more importantly, how they express it. I love how they both punctuated their sentences with touch. It didn’t seem like they were even aware of it, but there was a continuous stream of gentle squeezes and flirtatious smiles. By the time our bottle of red was empty, the rain let up so we set off for a tour around Lake Merritt. It’s one of their favorite spots and it’s easy to see why. In the middle of a huge bustling city, Lake Merritt is a calm oasis. Which is exactly what Avi and Samantha are for each other.
