After proclaiming ‘white rabbits’ to secure my annual dosage of good luck, the first thing I did New Years Day 2016 was check my phone. That was when I saw a very enthusiastic message proclaiming ‘I love your work’ not once but twice. Talk about starting the year out right. I was already happier than a bird with a french fry and I hadn’t even gotten out of bed yet! The message was from my stylist, Joleen, the magician responsible for all my good hair days. She and Corey were engaged and planning their 2017 New Years Eve wedding in Panama City. A mere 728 days in advanced.
#ThruTHICKLINthin a lot of Corey and Joleen’s plans changed over two years, but their dedication to each other didn’t. You can see their eyes light up when they’re together, constantly making each other laugh. And that sense of humor came in handy on the wedding day. New Years Eve turned into the coldest day of the year. Florida weather is unpredictable at best so for good measure, we got dark clouds, freezing rain and a strong wind, too. Even with that challenge, this hardy group celebrated the entire day and night without one brightly colored hair out of place. Not surprising considering a large number of attendee’s were stylists. Affectionately known as the Goonies, this group came ready to party no matter what. And their bold coifs have inspired me to consider something other than fertilizer brown.
This wedding was such a great way to end 2017. It felt like a symbolic nod to Loving v Virginia, who’s fight for marriage rights 50 years ago is the reason couples like Joleen and Corey can get married. I’m eternally grateful for that and not just because it means an increase in cake consumption. It’s couples like Joleen and Corey who value my work despite my weirdness…or the weather! Thank you Mr & Mrs Thicklin – cheers to a New Year!
